As well as narrative coaching and therapeutic coaching I also offer a specialised form of coaching known as embodied ‘parts work’. This involves a person physically, symbolically ‘stepping into’ a part or aspect of themselves that they want to explore more and becoming that part and speaking from that place. For example, this might be the part of you that gets irritated with your partner,…or the part of you that holds you back in your life,…or the part of you that would like to have more fun,…or the part of you that just wants to curl up under the duvet and block the world out. By stepping into a parts, we bring them up out of shadow and into conscious awareness where we can begin to ‘get a handle’ on them and loosen the hold they have over our lives. When we explore these parts further, we invariably find that they just want to be seen and heard and acknowledged and that they represent something in our lives that we need to pay attention to. Over time, working in this way helps us to ‘bring back into the fold’ neglected parts of ourselves so that we can live and act in the world from a more whole and healthier place.
